Design Inspiration – Nicoletta Darita de la Brown

Embroidered plastic bags, various sizes.

“Embroidered corner-store grocery bags. Rescued from the gutter; blowing down the street like city tumbleweed. I reclaim and elevate what once was discarded by creating embellished art objects. Growing up in Brooklyn and Harlem I’d visit my block’s bodega daily, with pennies in hand, and leave with priceless treasures. More than just bags, they reflect a sense of pride for my neighborhood and are a symbol of my cultural identity.”

Guest Blogger – Ask Her Friends

Hello there! My name is Rowena and I am delighted that Rhea invited me to say a little bit about our new business, AskHerFriends, and how we’re helping people find great gift ideas – for your mum, friend, sister, wife, girlfriend…or even yourself!

There are some amazing businesses out there, really original designer-makers like Rhea (check out her new photography!) and we love what people like Handmade Nottingham or Crafty Fox are doing to bring these people to wider attention. So we’re always on the hunt to find the best of the best – lovingly hand-made and designed gifts for women; gift ideas with beautiful stories behind them.

But we thought – is that enough? Our founder, Ben, after his worm farm epiphany, always talks about gifts being a ‘symptom’ of how we relate to each other. After a few confused looks amongst his listeners (fortunately I’ve heard it a few times before now!) he goes on about how gifts are just one really obvious way in which we show the other person how much we care and cherish them. So more than anything, we’re trying to build this trusted destination where anyone who is in a gift-giving pickle can come for help – or even, because we work with such lovely sellers and bloggers, where anyone can come and read stories and browse a range of ideas, even if they’re just looking for a treat for themselves.

So, by focusing on the recipient, we’re more of a department store, with great and original kitchen-top creatives, but also with the best in designer luxury; from traditional ideas to more unusual experiences and day out, and even luxury holidays through our partners at Secret Escapes. And we won’t stop there – we’re bringing on board some great chefs and recipe bloggers, and who knows, we may even work with craft bloggers in the future, because who says the best gift has to be something you buy? That’s definitely what we believe.

We do have some nice bits of technology on our site, if we do say so ourselves, so if any of our visitors are lost in a gift-picking puzzle we can guide them with our Idea Map: a series of six questions to get to the nitty gritty of who they are buying for and what they are really likely to LOVE. This way, we hope to help anyone who’s ‘maybe not so sure’, a ‘bit undecided’, or ‘just really cautious’…to try something new when they are trying to find a gift. But technology can only ever be part of the answer – what we’re really excited about is bringing together a community of experts and entrepreneurs who are all trying to help people do something that little bit more special for the ones they love.

Playing with crochet

Since releasing my new crochet jewellery range I have become more and more interested in crochet and creating big statement pieces. So I have been having a play around with ideas and I would love to know what you think! I have been using cotton T shirt yarn to create pieces that are machine washable and easy to wear.

This design is gives you a different look on each side due to the stitch

After playing around with more chunky colourful pieces I have also looked at a smaller simpler design to go with the range.

These designs are going to take some time to develop but I know I am going to have fun doing it!
